Since Khymeira asked, here is a summary of my little micro-ecology

10gal tank (which usually has about 7 gallons/28L at any given time to prevent escapees, and no filter beyond a sponge filter and 1kg of elodea)
- h. formosa mosquitofish (~5 fry)
- ghost shrimp (2 of indeterminate sex, 1 massive female who’s at least a year old and named Rambo because she’s survived the tank since day one)
- red cherry shrimp (~5, but I have a hard time keeping track because they’re tiny and there’s so much plant cover)
- 2 African clawed frogs, Aradia and Bilious. Hungry.

“Nano-pond” - 100L office bin, half full with a Tetra filter
-3 marmorkrebs crayfish, for all your mad cloning needs (also scissors with legs, and have cut apart and eaten every plant I’ve given them)
- h. formosa (~15 of varying size)

Bawls bottle
- a few hundred daphnia which act as a backup food source for the whole system

Everything in the system is relatively cheap and easy to keep assuming you let the tanks cycle first and commit to regular water changes.

If you just want a shrimp colony get a 5 gallon/20L tank, put in a sponge filter, let it cycle, get a few plants like marimo and java ferns, and then add the shrimp after it’s been stable for a few weeks. Toss in an algae wafer once in a while and they’ll do the rest.

Right as I was worried all my little cherry shrimps weren’t going to breed again (it’s been a few months and they’ve been moved to a tank with aggressive neighbors), my two big females berried, which means in a couple weeks I’m gonna have a few dozen baby shrimpies running around my fish tank!
Seriously if you want a cool aquatic pet, RCSs are really fun and they’re getting to be dirt cheap if you look in the right places. And they’re hardy as guppies with a lower bioload. Talk to me if you want to try your hand at setting up a colony - you can do it for fifty dollars and it’ll last forever if you take care of them.
